Thrilling Things to Do
in Igatpuri for Nature Lovers
Home / blog
Maharashtra has many gems and one of them is Igatpuri, nestled in the lush green Western Ghats. If you are a nature lover, Igatpuri is not just a destination; it’s a journey into the wild and natural beauty. The experience of leaving the noise of the city behind can be an experience in itself as you are taken into a beautiful, serene place. No matter what your interests are, there is plenty to do in Igatpuri: adventure or tranquility. And whether you want to hike, drive, or relax in nature's peaceful beauty, Igatpuri offers it all and more.
In this post, we take you to explore some of the most exhilarating things to do in Igatpuri so that you can enjoy the discovery along the trails and memorable experiences with every moment spent in nature.
If you have a passion for hiking with a historical touch, Tringalwadi Fort is the place to be. Situated at 3,000 feet, this fort lets you see the mountains and valleys from every angle. The trek starts easy—a gradual climb through the wild green. After that part, the trek moves into moderate terrain—ideal for the adventurer in you.
The unique saddle shape gives this fort some architectural intrigue to the trek. Once you get to the top, the scenery is beautiful, and the silence it provides makes you feel like you are in a different world altogether.
One of the best activities you can participate in as part of your itinerary of things to do in Igatpuri is visiting Camel Valley in the early morning. Camel Valley is literally just outside of town, a stunning open area of cliffs and deep gorges. During the monsoon months, you will find waterfalls cascading down the gorges from nearly the top of what appear to be 1,000 ft. cliffs!
Sunrise here is simply spectacular. The very first rays of light from the sun hit the mist-covered hills and the whole valley is awash with golden light. It is something all nature lovers would definitely enjoy.
Vihigaon Waterfall has both beauty and thrills for those who indulge in water-based activities. It's a lovely seasonal waterfall in a dense forest. The waterfall is a great place to rappel, particularly during the monsoon months. It's not every day that you can free climb down a roaring waterfall, holding on to a single rope for security and an incredible adventure!
Even if you don't rappel down the waterfall, experiencing the waterfall by standing close enough to feel the cooler mist on your face and to hear the roar of the water is still an experience worth taking!
Located at the foot of the Thal Ghat, Bhatsa River Valley is another well-kept secret. This valley has stunning rock formations, dense foliage, and a snaking river, which make it an excellent place for photography. The valley is not as populated as some other areas, so it allows you to truly immerse yourself amongst nature and take in every bit of beauty possible.
It’s also scenic for a picnic, nature walk, or just for staring at the gorgeous landscape. If you like the quiet side of adventure, this is one of the more scenic and low-key things to do in Igatpuri.
While not exactly “thrilling,” Dhamma Giri Vipassana International Academy offers a different adventure inside. Situated in the hills, it is a world-renowned school for the ancient practice of Vipassana meditation.
If the full 10-day course is a bit much to commit to, you can visit the center, walk around the grounds, take in the architecture, walk the peaceful surroundings, and feel the spiritual meditative energy. It is a place where nature and inner peace meet nicely.
Another gem worth a visit is the enchanting Vaitarna Dam. With its green hills and verdant thick forests, it is one of the most peaceful places I have come across in the
locality. The water here mirrors the sky with stunning accuracy, and the STILLNESS is spectacular and rejuvenating.
Many (not all) prefer to kayak, take pictures, or just lean back on the banks and enjoy the sounds of nature. A lovely place to unwind after a day filled with activity.
For an adventurous blast, why not hike the highest peak in Maharashtra, which is Kalsubai Peak? Technically just outside of Igatpuri, it is worth the detour. The trail is difficult, consisting of rocky pathways and many steep terrain climbs, but 5,400 feet high is nothing short of phenomenal views of the Sahyadri mountain range.
You will need proper shoes, water and lots of energy, but the euphoria at the top makes it all worth it. For many people this hike is the highlight of things to do in Igatpuri.
For the most natural experience, spend a night under the stars. There are plenty of campsites around Igatpuri, especially by Vaitarna and Upper Vaitarna lakes. Imagine a cool mountain breeze, a low crackling fire, a billion stars in the heavens, and the sound of water nearby.
This is one of those bare, naked, unplugged experiences that is with you long after the trip is over. Camping by the lake will add a great memory to take away from Igatpuri, whether you're traveling with friends or as a couple.
It's exhilarating even for a drive in Igatpuri. The Western Ghats are dramatic and winding and offer beautiful views at every bend. If you visit during monsoon, you will feel submerged in the mist that descends upon hills, offering saturation and a look from the viewpoint of a cloud forest.
Be spontaneous and make some stops along the way to enjoy the views, take photos or grab a cup of tea from a roadside stall. Often, it is the little stops that become the best part of the trip.
Igatpuri is not just a hill station but a refuge for those who take pleasure in nature. There are treks, waterfalls, small valleys, and mist-filled sunrises—a good mixture of thrills and peacefulness. Whether you are looking for an adrenaline fix or just want to sit and enjoy a view, you will find there are lots of fulfilling things to do in Igatpuri.
